The latest branch of the Great British Doner franchise, which founder Mehmet Nezir Korkut said has cost over £3 million, was opened in a well-attended ceremony which included two MPs.

The fifth branch of the franchise is located in Elk Mill shopping park in Oldham. They gave away free doner kebabs to the first 100 customers.

GBD was founded by Turkish restaurateur and entrepreneur, Korkut, who has been in the hospitality industry for over 25 years.

He said: “We opened our first branch last year in Deansgate in Manchester followed by two branches in Liverpool then one in Piccadilly, so the Oldham branch is the fifth in the franchise.”

Korkut said the franchise has created over 100 jobs. GBD don’t use minced meat, but they use steak meat. They don’t use E-numbers or artificial colours in their doner and only use halal ingredients.

He added: “We have one of the best Kebabs – the award winning vegan doner.”

GBD won in the Best Doner category at the 14th Kebab Awards in February, as well as previously winning Best Vegan award from People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA).

Korkut plans to open 100 branches all over the UK in the next five years. His first shop was in Chorlton selling home-made doner.

He was born and raised in Turkey. He said they offer “Turkish doner with a British touch,” and that he is supported by his six brothers.

Bolton MP, Yasmin Qureshi, said: “The food is excellent. After hearing about the opening, I thought, ‘I have to come to support him.’”

She was joined by Afzal Khan, MP for Manchester Rusholme.

Qureshi added: “The food is great, I would say to customers, come and try the food at least once. I guarantee once you have eaten one, you will want to come back again and again. The food is good quality, and it is well made.”

One customer, who is in the food industry himself, said he heard about the opening ceremony on social media, and he enjoyed the food. “I will come again, and I am amazed that it cost £3 million to set up.”
