A film, The Oldham Man and The Sea, was shown today (26 April) at the Queen Elizabeth Hall, about Oldham Athletic owner Frank Rothwell, who singlehandedly rowed 3,000 miles across the Atlantic Ocean.

He made the journey twice and broke Guinness records along the way. He now holds the world record for oldest person to cross the Atlantic at the age of 73.

The film was screened four times throughout the day and about 400 people came to the screenings to raise thousands of pounds for two charities including Mahdlo and Oldham Athletic Community Trust.

Rothwell's passion for Oldham is clear as he spoke proudly about the town being the birthplace of the first IVF baby.

He received an OBE in 2025 for charitable services and has raised £1.4 million for charity through his two solo trips crossing the Atlantic.

Rothwell said: "I have 80,000 miles of sailing experience and I am a Yacht Master. There aren't many people from the UK who have as much sailing experience."

He said he loves working whether it's digging or shovelling or doing something technical.

"Come to Oldham Athletic. We would love you all to come to a football match. Come and see what it's like, come and enjoy." he said, "The film was in the Manchester Film Festival and it won in the best documentary category. It's pretty good to win it. There was a lot of competition. We have had fantastic audiences. it's been absolutely brilliant."
