Hathershaw College has strengthened its campaign for a new school building following a visit from local MP Jim McMahon, who backed the school's vision for the future.
During the visit, Susie Fraser, Principal, shared her and school leaders' aspirations to provide students with a learning environment that reflects their high expectations. Central to this is the school's bid for a new building, which would represent a significant investment in the future and education of young people within the local area.
The visit also highlighted the importance of preserving the school’s, and Oldham's, heritage. Both the management team and Mr McMahon agreed that, should the bid be successful, retaining key historic features of the existing building would honour the school's long-standing place in the heart of the community, while creating a significant investment in the future of education at Hathershaw College.
As the only secondary school in Oldham yet to benefit from a new building, such a project presents an exciting opportunity to invest in and transform the learning experience for future students. Every young person in Oldham deserves the same high quality learning facilities across the borough, helping to unlock opportunities and raise aspiration across the community.
Head teacher, Fraser, said: "It was a pleasure to welcome Jim McMahon to our College and to share with him our plans.
“As well as discussing the important history of the school and its place within the community, we were able to look ahead to the prospect of a new school building.
“If we are successful in our bid, we share Mr McMahon's hopes that we can retain some of the original features of our building, as it symbolises an important point in time, but we know that our young people now deserve a building that is in line with our hopes and aspirations for them as the next generation of our town".
MP McMahon added: "It was a pleasure to visit Hathershaw College and hear more about its ambitions for the future.
“The school has a proud history and has served generations of local families, but it's clear that today's pupils deserve a learning environment that matches the high aspirations staff have for them.
“That's why I've been pleased to support the school's bid for a new building. If successful, it will be a real investment in the future of our young people, while retaining the historic features that reflect the school's important place in our community".
