Oldham Men Prepare For Epic Charity Challenge

A group of Oldham men will be running and cycling from Liverpool to Oldham on 13 June, all in aid of charity.

Sharaz Asif, from Glodwick, has been involved in yearly fundraising challenges for the past six years. The upcoming run and cycle promise to be the most gruelling yet.

He will be running in memory of his brother, Shahbaz, who passed away during the Covid pandemic five years ago and for the many loved ones who have left this world. The funds raised will also be used to build water wells/pumps in Pakistan.

“I want to do my bit to help people struggling all over the world,” he said. “In this campaign I will work with Kesser Shazad and Mohammed Asif. They are helping me to organise the event.

“There are many others working in the background.”

Ten participants have already confirmed, with organisers expecting more to join before the event.

In preparation for the run, Sharaz trains at the gym every day for an hour and does incline walking and goes on the Stairmaster. He runs five miles every other day.

The route from Liverpool to Oldham is approximately 40 to 50 miles and is expected to take between 12 and 15 hours to run, or around five hours to cycle.

“Because we are doing it for a good cause, I am sure we will complete it as a team,” Sharaz added. “Once we start, there will only be minimal stops.”

The group is working with the charity, One Nation. All proceeds will go to them.

He said if everyone does their bit by donating or joining then it’s possible to make a “massive difference.”

Sharaz said: “Anything I do, I do it with others in Oldham. The effort I put in is just one percent. They do more than I do. I don’t want to take all the credit as there is a group of us.”

He added that Oldham has a good community, which comes together in times of need. The team have raised over £30,000 for a variety of causes.

Kessar Shazad is another organiser who will be cycling from Liverpool to Oldham. He is currently in Uganda on a charity mission.

He said: "I get involved with these campaigns to give back to the community. I've been doing it for the last six or seven years and I have never looked back once.

"As of yet we have raised £2,000, but we are looking to raise roughly £10,000 for this campaign."
