Young people across Oldham are encouraged to discover a world of adventure, qualifications, leadership and personal development as Oldham Sea Cadets and Royal Marines Cadets launch a recruitment drive for new members.
While cadets can enjoy activities such as sailing, kayaking, camping, navigation, fieldcraft, first aid and other activities, the opportunities extend beyond the traditional idea of cadet life.
Through their time with the organisation, young people will have the chance to work towards a range of recognised qualifications and awards, helping them build valuable skills and experience for further education, employment and their future careers.
Cadets have the opportunity to participate in the Duke of Edinburgh's Award (DofE), developing skills, improving their fitness, volunteering within their communities and taking part in adventurous expeditions.
There are also opportunities to work towards BTEC qualifications, giving cadets the chance to gain recognised vocational qualifications alongside their cadet experience.
For those with an interest in creativity and the arts, the Arts Award provides opportunities to develop creative skills, explore different areas of the arts and gain recognised accreditation.
Cadets can also progress into leadership through the Young Leaders Award, developing communication, organisation, teamwork and leadership skills while taking on responsibility and supporting others.
These opportunities sit alongside the many practical and adventurous activities available through the Sea Cadets and Royal Marines Cadets.
Petty Officer, Daniel Angle, said: “What we offer young people goes far beyond simply turning up in uniform. We want our cadets to leave us with experiences, qualifications, confidence and skills that they can use throughout their lives.
“We’re particularly proud of the fact that cadets can develop at their own pace. They can challenge themselves, discover new interests, make lifelong friends and gain experiences that can really help them stand out when applying for college, university, apprenticeships or employment.”
The aim is to provide young people with a safe and supportive environment where they can learn and have fun.
Oldham Sea Cadets and Royal Marines Cadets also provide opportunities for young people to explore STEM - Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics.
Petty Officer, Daniel Angle, added: “We believe every young person has potential, and our job is to help them discover it.
“Whether they join because they want adventure, qualifications, leadership experience, new friends or simply something positive to do each week, we want them to have the opportunity to achieve something they can be proud of.”
These experiences can help young people discover new interests and consider future careers in areas such as engineering, technology, science, defence and the maritime industries.
No previous experience is required, and prospective cadets and their parents or guardians are encouraged to get in touch to find out more or arrange a visit.
