Oldham Documentary Maker: "It is extremely difficult to get into filmmaking"

An award-winning Oldham documentary maker spoke about being in the profession and his passion for addressing societal issues.

A R Rayhan is dedicated to his work and has enjoyed interviewing people such as the former leader of the council, Arooj Shah, and he is currently making a documentary about another local figure – Irish Immy.

He has made a theatrical and dramatised film about Sickle Cell Disease which is prominent in the black community, and he has raised awareness about homelessness by following a man who lives on the streets of Oldham to highlight the struggles and difficulties of living rough.

He has made four short films and three documentaries.

He said: “It is extremely difficult to get into filmmaking...Filmmaking isn’t something you can fluke.

“There are challenges as we are minorities in this country, so it's natural that we will find some hurdles that we have to hop over.”
