Students and teachers from Samurai Ju-Jitsu Academy visited the mayor of Oldham, Eddie Moores, at his Parlour in Oldham.

“On 26 May we welcomed a fantastic group of young people and adults…We heard about the journey of the Samurai Ju-Jitsu club and the achievements of their young people,” the mayor said on Facebook.

“Martial arts are about far more than punches, kicks, and self-defence. It’s about helping people grow.”

Based at the Siam Camp Dojo on Fitton Hill Road, Samurai Ju-Jitsu Academy teaches traditional Japanese Ju-Jitsu in a safe environment for children and adults alike.

Ju-jitsu is a system of self-defence, personal development, and discipline. Known as ‘the yielding art,’ ju-jitsu is built on balance, timing, and technique not strength, making it accessible for children, families, and individuals of all abilities.

The club’s mission is to develop confident individuals and future leaders through martial arts.

For children, this means developing focus, respect, and self-belief in a supportive environment.

For adults, it’s about rebuilding confidence, sharpening mindset, and learning self-defence.

The club currently has around 30 registered members, with approximately 20 students training regularly each week.

“Our aim is not only to teach self-defence — but to help build future leaders,” said Mark Coope, head sensei at the club.

“One thing that has become especially clear over the years is this: ‘Children are colour-blind.’ Inside the dojo, students from all backgrounds train together, support each other, and work toward shared goals as a team.

“For Samurai Ju-Jitsu Academy, success is not measured purely by belts or trophies — but by the confidence, discipline, leadership and self-belief students carry with them into everyday life.”
