Awards Presented To Local Councillors For Service To Community
L-R: President Jackie Pearcey, Councillor Alicia Marland

Local Liberal Democrat Councillors Howard Sykes and Alicia Marland both received prestigious awards to recognise their commitment and service to civic duties at the recent Northwest party conference (Sat 11) in Denton presented by President Jackie Pearcey.

Cllr Sykes was awarded the Andrew Stunell award for his service in public office, recognising over 40 years as an active Councillor for Shaw.  He served nationally as Vice Chair of the Local Government Association (LGA) and was Leader of the national LGA Liberal Democrat Group for several years.

He was awarded the MBE in 2014 for services to local government, recognising his extensive work and leadership within the sector. Councillor Sykes remains a member of Shaw and Crompton Town Council and is serving as the Town Mayor in this municipal year.

Throughout his service he has been an active campaigner for many projects including bringing the metro to Oldham and a new medical centre for Shaw.

Cllr Marland was the recipient of the Tony Greaves award for her grassroots project to increase the number and availability of defibrillators in her community.

She said: "I am very proud to have increased the number of available AEDs to the community: a total of 10 devices so far with more planned."

"One of these was used to successfully resuscitate a bowler at Springhead Social Club only couple of months after the device had been installed. It shows that early invention it vital, as well as knowing where your nearest defibrillator is."

"To be nominated and receiving this award is truly humbling."
